Concrete Sealing: Is It Worth It for a Florida Driveway?
Sealing a concrete driveway is worth it if you regularly deal with oil drips, rust staining or fast regrowth of algae, because sealed concrete keeps those on the surface where they wipe off instead of soaking into the pores. It typically lasts two to three years in Florida conditions. It is a different job from paver sealing, which also locks joint sand in place, and concrete must be fully clean and dry before any sealant goes on.
What sealing concrete actually does
Concrete looks solid and is porous. Oil, rust, leaf tannin and organic growth all soak in, which is why an old stain will not wash out no matter how long you spend on it.
A sealant closes those pores. Contamination then sits on the surface, where it can be removed, rather than wicking down where it cannot.
It also slows algae noticeably. Growth still lands, but it has far less to grip, so the driveway stays clean longer between washes.
How it differs from paver sealing
Paver sealing does everything concrete sealing does and one thing more: it binds the joint sand between the units so it stops washing out in heavy rain.
That structural element does not exist on a poured slab, so concrete sealing is purely about protection and appearance.

When it is worth the money, and when it is not
Worth it: driveways that see oil drips, anywhere sprinklers cause rust staining, decorative or stamped concrete you want to keep looking sharp, and any slab you have just paid to have deep cleaned.
Not worth it: concrete that is already badly cracked or spalling, which needs repair first, and slabs due to be replaced.
The one rule that matters is that sealing traps whatever is underneath. Sealing over a stain or over algae locks it in permanently, so the clean has to come first and the surface has to be properly dry. That is why we quote cleaning and sealing together. Will sealing make my driveway slippery?
A matte or penetrating sealant will not meaningfully change traction. High-gloss products can, which is why we do not recommend gloss on anything you walk on barefoot.
How long before I can drive on it?
Typically 24 to 48 hours depending on product and humidity. We give you an exact figure on the day.
How often does it need redoing?
Every two to three years here. You can see when it is due, because water stops beading and starts soaking in.
